Thanks for asking, Lew ... Because I couldn't find a picture of a cocky-looking female with a crown! Should have commented on that! (And we shall draw no implications from that!)

I had a mentor when I first became a childcare director (from the most unlikely source) - the person I was replacing. She gave me her number and told me to call her anytime someone said, "Well Gail always did it this way or Gail said this." I called - I thought too often, but she always answered and always talked me through until I understood.

It was through her example that I have tried to mentor some of my own mentees. I tell them to call me so we can talk something through. Meet for lunch or visit a site just to be the voice from the outside when you think you don't know what to do - just like Gail did for me.

(no need for disc, you recently did one for me!)

I have had numerous mentors, and coaches! I also have an amazing family! My mom though stands out as the most AMAZING! Why? To this day she is consistent, objective, and incredibly loving!
So many times I have found myself wanting to quit, filled with despair, and full of all the wrong thinking! My mother has always been there to listen, coach, and love me! She set the example for me in so many ways: how to listen to a teen (ME) with tongue clinched between her teeth. She knew when to speak, when to listen, and when neither would matter, she held me in her arms!
My hope for you, as you read this… be the person you wish was there for you! Listen more; judges less, offer kind words of hope, less words of condemnation, and most of all, learn how to love with your whole heart. It really does have a place in business. Accountability, responsibility, and performance are many times enhanced when a person knows they belong, are needed, and are loved!

The running partner is chiming in: Amen! As we discussed IF something can be done about it right away (zipper down, dirt on face, brocolli in teeth) it should be mentioned, but if it's something that can't be addressed (ripped pants, two different shoes, VPL -- visible panty lines), telling the person might make him or her feel REALLY uncomfortable.

I think we talked about how, in a relationship, we thought it was best to GENTLY mention a "flaw," otherwise the other party might think it's OK to continue doing what he or she is doing. It might hurt to hear it (and tell it) because sometimes looking in that VERY CLEAR mirror is painful

In business, too, I think it's important to "nip it in the bud" if someone is doing something, saying something, or behaving in a manner that is unprofessional (perfume is too strong, using the wrong name for a coworker, making inappropriate jokes, body odor, revealing dress, etc.). Letting it go, covering for coworkers, or dismissing them for something of which they might have been unaware is just as unprofessional.
